Wedding Planning Timeline UK: A 12-Month Checklist

A month-by-month UK wedding planning checklist — exactly what to book, decide and finalise from 12 months out to the morning of.

Planning a wedding without a clear timeline is the single biggest cause of stress for couples we meet. A good plan does not just stop things being forgotten — it spreads decisions across months so you are never overwhelmed. This is the timeline we use with our own clients, adapted for couples planning a UK wedding themselves.

12 months out. Set the overall budget and agree how you will fund it. Draft the guest list — even a rough number transforms which venues are realistic. Book the venue, confirm the date, and start a conversation with a wedding planner if you intend to use one. Most luxury venues book 12–18 months ahead, and the best UK photographers and florists are reserved at this stage too.

10 months out. Lock in the photographer, videographer, florist and caterer (if not included with the venue). Book accommodation blocks for guests. Start thinking about the creative direction — colour palette, mood, level of formality.

8 months out. Send save the dates. Book the band or DJ, the celebrant or registrar, and the transport. Begin dress and outfit fittings. Order or commission stationery suites.

6 months out. Finalise the menu and wine pairings with the caterer. Book hair and makeup trials. Confirm the rehearsal dinner venue. Start thinking through the order of the day — ceremony length, drinks reception, speeches, first dance.

4 months out. Send formal invitations. Confirm the floral design, lighting plan, and any production hire (marquees, dancefloors, furniture). Order wedding rings. Plan the honeymoon and ensure passports are in date.

2 months out. Final dress fitting. Chase outstanding RSVPs. Finalise the seating plan. Confirm the run sheet with all suppliers. Brief the wedding party on their roles.

1 month out. Confirm final guest numbers with the caterer. Settle outstanding supplier balances. Collect rings. Walk through the venue with your planner or coordinator and finalise every logistical detail — arrival times, set up windows, contingency plans.

The week of. Pack overnight bags. Prepare tips and thank-you cards for suppliers. Brief the best man and maid of honour on the run sheet. Then — and this is the important part — stop. Trust the plan, trust your team, and enjoy the last few days of being engaged.

If reading this list makes you feel slightly overwhelmed, that is exactly why couples bring in a planner. A good planner does not just manage the day — they carry the cognitive load of the entire timeline so you can stay focused on what matters.
