Wedding Budget Breakdown UK: Where Your Money Actually Goes
An honest, planner-built breakdown of how a UK wedding budget is really spent — with realistic percentages for every category.
Most online wedding budget guides are written by people who have never actually planned a wedding. The percentages are wrong, the categories are missing, and the totals are wildly optimistic. This is how a UK wedding budget really breaks down — built from hundreds of real client budgets at the luxury end of the market.
Venue: 25–35% of total budget. This includes hire fees, exclusive-use premiums, accommodation costs for the couple, and (in some cases) corkage. For marquee weddings, this percentage drops to 5–10% for land hire — but the marquee production category swells correspondingly.
Catering and drinks: 25–35%. The single most under-budgeted category in DIY planning. A luxury wedding caterer in the UK typically costs £150–£280 per head before drinks, then another £40–£80 per head on wine, plus welcome drinks, post-dinner spirits and any late-night food. For 100 guests, total catering and drinks routinely exceeds £25,000.
Florals and styling: 8–15%. A statement floral installation (ceremony arch, dramatic table florals, hanging arrangements) is what defines the visual character of most luxury weddings — and it costs accordingly. Budget couples often underestimate this by a factor of two.
Photography and film: 6–10%. Top UK photographers cost £4,000–£8,000 for the day. Adding a videographer typically doubles this. This is one of the few categories where we always counsel against cutting — the photographs are what survives the day.
Music and entertainment: 5–8%. A live band, DJ, ceremony musicians, late-night act. The biggest variable: a great wedding band costs £4,000–£7,000; an average one costs £1,500–£2,500. The difference on the dancefloor is enormous.
Marquee, production and hire: 0–25%. Zero for fixed venues. Substantial for marquee weddings (see our marquee guide). Includes furniture hire, lighting, dancefloors, lounge areas, additional staffing.

Attire and beauty: 4–8%. Dress, accessories, suits, hair and makeup, trials. Hair and makeup alone is typically £600–£1,500.
Transport: 1–3%. Couple's car, guest coaches, supplier transport. Marquee weddings often need significantly more of this category.
Planning and coordination: 5–15%. A full-service planner is typically 8–12% of total budget. On-the-day coordination is closer to 2–4%.
Contingency: 5–10%. The category nobody includes and everyone needs. Last-minute supplier upgrades, weather pivots, additional guests, design tweaks. Build it in from the start.
The honest reality. A 100-guest luxury wedding in the UK rarely comes in under £60,000 done properly. A 150-guest wedding at the top end of the market regularly clears £150,000. Building a budget that reflects this from day one is the single best favour you can do yourself.
