How to Choose a Marquee Wedding Venue

The questions every couple should ask before committing to a marquee wedding — site selection, hidden costs, and what the brochures don't tell you.

A marquee wedding offers something no traditional venue can — a true blank canvas, complete creative freedom, and a wedding that feels entirely yours. But marquees are also where couples most often underestimate cost, logistics, and risk. This is what we wish every couple knew before choosing this route.

Start with the site, not the marquee. The biggest decision is the land itself. A flat, well-drained site with good vehicle access, mains water and three-phase power transforms what is possible and dramatically reduces cost. A picturesque slope with no access road and a generator-only power supply will quietly add £15,000–£25,000 to your production budget. Walk the site with a marquee company before signing anything.

Understand what 'marquee hire' actually includes. A bare marquee structure is roughly 15–20% of the total marquee production cost. The rest is flooring, lining, lighting, heating, dancefloor, furniture, generators, toilets, kitchen tent, catering trucks, bar fit-out and crew. A £12,000 marquee is rarely a £12,000 wedding space.

Weather contingency is not optional. A British summer can deliver 28 degrees and sunshine or a week of rain. The marquee needs proper drainage, the access tracks need matting, and the schedule needs flexibility built in. Spend the money on a proper interior heating system — even in July. Guests remember being cold; they rarely remember the canapés.

Think hard about toilets. Luxury toilet trailers transform the guest experience and cost £1,200–£3,000 depending on guest numbers and event length. Standard portaloos will undo a great deal of beautiful design work in a single visit.

Catering changes everything. A field is not a kitchen. Your caterer will need a full mobile kitchen setup — sometimes a separate kitchen tent, prep tables, refrigeration trucks, and water access. Confirm what they need before you commit to the venue, not after.

Plan for the day before and the day after. Marquee setup typically takes 2–3 days. Strike takes 1–2. That means the site is in use for the best part of a week. Make sure the landowner is comfortable with the full timeline, not just the wedding day itself.

Budget honestly. A 120-guest luxury marquee wedding in the UK rarely comes in under £40,000 for the production alone, before catering and drinks. Done well it can rival anything a fixed venue offers. Done on too tight a budget, it can feel exposed and improvised. There is no middle path with marquees — commit properly or choose a different route.

A great marquee wedding is one of the most beautiful events you can host. If you have the site, the budget, and the willingness to embrace the complexity, we would build one with you tomorrow. If any of those three is missing, a fixed venue will give you a better day.
